These Foods Will Make Your Eyes Healthier

Everyone, young and old, needs to take good care of their body. You need to consciously look out for your personal health and not just defer caring for a particular body part till when you attain a certain age. A lot of young people ignore their eye health because they think older people are the only ones who should bother about that. Thus, even though eye health isn’t particularly as exciting or interesting as working out, everyone needs to consciously take preventive steps against eye diseases such as cataracts.

For the protection of the eyes against eye diseases that are age-related, an incorporation of foods that have high antioxidants components in your diet is important. Such foods include zeaxanthin, zinc, vitamin C, vitamin E, lutein and beta-carotene.

These different foods are not just tasty, they can also help in the protection of the eyes.

They include

1. Carrots

Carrots and other vegetables such as eggs, sweet potatoes, green leafy vegetables, and squash contain rich amounts of beta-carotene and vitamin A. It has been discovered that vitamin A helps in the protection of an eye area known as the cornea. Vitamin A also helps in supplying the protein known as rhodopsin to the eyes. This protein makes the sight in conditions where the light is low possible. WebMD has it that the sources of Vitamin A include animals, vegetables and also fruits.

2. Eggs

Eggs are not just a source of protein, they also contain rich amount of zeaxanthin and lutein which are the antioxidants that help in the protection of the eyes from dangerous blue light and free radicals. Taking meals that contain a high amount of zeaxanthin and lutein may help in the reduction of the risk of getting chronic diseases of the eye such as AMD and also cataracts. There are different ways by which you can incorporate more eggs into your meal. For instance, you can simply just boil eggs and consume them directly or add them to avocado toast.

3. Kale

This is also rich in zeaxanthin and lutein and that brings it on the list of foods you should consider incorporating as a part of your diet for the protection of your eyes. You can add kale to your smoothie or as a salad base.

 

4. Salmon

This is a rich and healthy source of omega-3 fatty acids. The human body cannot produce omega-3 fatty acid and so it is important to have as a part of regular diet food that has rich amounts of it. Foods such as salmon that contain omega-3 in high amounts contribute to retinal function and visual development in general. Asides salmon, other foods that richly have omega-3 include sardines, walnut, soybeans, tuna, chia seeds, and flax seeds.

5. Berries

Berries are inarguably rich in antioxidants. There are different types of berries, including strawberries, blackberries, and blueberries. All the berries contain a high amount of Vitamin C that can contribute to the improvement of eye health. You can add them to your smoothie or fruit salad.

6. Citrus Fruits

WebMD states that Vitamin C is one of the top antioxidants good for the eyes. It ensures that blood vessel found in the eyes remain healthy. In addition, Vitamin C can also help in the prevention of AMD and cataracts. Fruits that are known to be rich in vitamin C include tangerines, oranges, and grapefruits. Also, red peppers and strawberries offer benefits similar to those that are gotten from citric fruits.

7. Almonds

Almonds, as well as nuts, green leaf vegetables, avocado, vegetable oils and sweet potatoes, contain a high amount of vitamin E. This antioxidant can help in the protection of the eyes from different oxidative damages that can cause AMD and cataracts.
